BSF Schools

10th Sep 2009

Munro+Whitten together with Maber Architects joined Galliford Try in their bid for two BFS Schools in Derby.

THE VISION was to develop a vibrant school environment at Derby Moor and Noel Baker that can be enjoyed by staff, students and the community alike whilst providing a stimulating external teaching resource across the curriculum.

The new external environment reflected the spatial scale of the buildings and provides a legible and coherent structure to the site.
Important and key landscape features were retained and reinforced, with new tree and shrub planting visually softening the building edges and areas of car park.

NOEL BAKER

A number of key spaces bring staff and pupils to the school and provide social and educational break out areas. They will contain a variety of planting, which will enrich the environment; offer seasonal interest, through colour, fragrance and texture. Underpinning the design ethos for the planting and spatial forms is the provision of a safe and secure place where natural surveillance is paramount.

DERBY MOOR

The external works to Derby Moor is broken down into a number of key zones, with their own defined character and function. Each zone identifies and addresses the requirements of its space to facilitate outdoor learning and wider community functions.
The site has major level changes, which allowed us to create vantage points, campus steps, amphitheatre and split learning and social areas.

Although the bid was unsuccessful our experience in working with teachers, pupils and the local education authority is now being applied to other school projects.
